FIRST BIENNIAL SUMMER EXHIBITION OF DAVIS-SACRAMENTO REGIONAL CONTEMPORARY ART AT UC DAVIS’S NELSON GALLERY
EXHIBITION TITLE: FLATLANDERS, A REGIONAL ROUNDUP OF 47 ARTISTS
runs from July 6th to August 13th at the Richard L. Nelson Gallery, UC Davis, Room 124 of the Art Building
Have you ever heard someone suggest that the local art scene is not worthy of serious consideration? Flatlanders once and for all does away with that doubt, demonstrating that the local art scene is dynamic, even burgeoning. A survey exhibition of forty-seven artists residing in the Sacramento-Davis-Woodland area, this show is an attempt to simultaneously advocate for the energy and quality of the regional art scene, and establish a periodic exhibition that argues for a shared level of ambition and accomplishment within that community.
“It has been an unusual opportunity and pleasure to make over fifty studio visits in April and May. The dedication of so many people in this region to making visual art, often in isolation, is very moving,” says Nelson Gallery Director and Curator Renny Pritikin.
Artists included in the exhibition are Joseph Bellacera, Carol Bernard, Tom Bills, Marlene Bloomberg, Marcia Cary, Melissa Chandon, Diana Jahns, Nathan Cordero, Fred Dalkey, Chris Daubert, Suzanna Duffy-Tajeldin, John Yoyogi Fortes, Matthias Geiger, Stephen Giannetti, Phil Gross, Robin Hill, Vera Iliatova, Paul Imagine, Stephen Kaltenbach, Susan Keizer, Gregory Kondos, Michaele LeCompte, Ed Luce, Emma Luna, Winifred Madison, Darrin Martin, Joan Moment, Kyle Monhollen, Anthony Montanino, Tom Monteith, Annie Murphy-Robinson, Hearne Pardee, Nigel Poor, Lisa Prettol, Lucy Puls, Annabeth Rosen, Alejandro Rubio, Karena Schmitendorf, Ryan Seng, Skinner, Wayne Thiebaud, Pat Tool McHugh, Bryce Vinokurov, Ellen Van Fleet, Jian Wang, Paula Wenzl, and Gina Werfel.
The opening reception will take place on Thursday July 6th from 6 to 8 pm. Admission is free. Also presented at the same time, in the office of the Nelson Gallery, is a small exhibition of drawings from the permanent collection by Whistler, Kondos and others, and recent acquisitions by the collection shown at the Buehler Alumni Center. Included are works by William T. Wiley, Gaston Lachaise, Diane Althoff and Irving Marcus.
The Nelson Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 11 to 5 and on Sunday from 2 to 5.
